How can I challenge my child academically when schoolwork is below his level?

questioner

Hello, I'm reaching out for some advice. My son is currently attending a public middle school. The schoolwork seems too easy for him. I'm worried that if he continues at this pace, he may become accustomed to only solving problems that are easily solvable and lose the ability to take initiative and make his own decisions. While I haven't considered tutoring or transferring him to a private school, I'm wondering what I can do at home to help him develop the ability to challenge himself.

Respondent

Hello! Thank you for reaching out. I'm Daisuke Nakamura, a scientist. It sounds like your son is very diligent or has developed excellent study habits, which is quite remarkable! It's not easy for many students to find their schoolwork too easy. The content taught in middle school often involves memorizing formulas and concepts without fully explaining the "why" behind them. However, in high school, you'll start to learn the reasons behind these concepts. For example, why is water represented as H2O? I think it would be a good idea to start introducing him to high school-level material at home, gradually. To facilitate this, you could create an environment where he can access high school textbooks on subjects he's interested in.

"Thank you for your prompt response. I understand that there are some students who don't put in much effort or do any additional studying at home and still find schoolwork easy. I've been trying to avoid giving him too much advanced work to keep him engaged in school, but perhaps it's time to change that. Being able to read high school textbooks at home sounds like it could be fun. He might not be able to say that it's easy anymore! I'll make sure to create an environment where he can explore challenging topics whenever he's ready. Thank you so much for your advice."
